6 Proven Quad Safety Tips for your first OHV Rental

OHV Rentals are great, but check out these safety tips first.

The thrill of hopping onto OHV Rentals and hitting the gas is irresistible. It’s popular with all ages thanks to the sense of freedom and excitement it sparks in your heart. However, while it may seem simple, it takes a lot of practice to become a secure, skilled OHV driver. Before you set out on your adventure, make sure you do your research, understand the rules, and ask your rental company a lot of questions about best practices for quad safety. Here, we’ll let you know the basics.

Properly Inflated Tires for First-Time OHV Riders

When you’re zooming along a desert, forest, or trail, you’ll encounter a lot of bumps, lumps, and hazards. You’ll need to make sure your tires are properly inflated according to the manufacturer’s specifications before you hit the trail. In fact, it may be wise to make sure you have new tired for maximum grip on dangerous surfaces.

Understand How to Stop

Just like learning to ride or drive anything else, it’s vital that you know how to stop your 4 wheeler rentals in any situation. One of the first things you should learn is where the brakes are. Like a bicycle, many simple OHVs have their rear wheels slowed and stopped by the right-hand brake, and the front wheels by the left-hand brake. To avoid flipping at high speeds or stopping while downhill, you should brake the rear wheels first, then the front wheels to finish the job.

Even Weight Distribution

One of the most popular tips given by professionals is to watch how you distribute your weight. Because the OHV’s center of gravity is so high, it’s especially easy to tip. Pay attention to where you’re leaning or holding on to.

Wear Proper Gear

The moment it comes time to mount their ATV quad rentals, many riders suddenly develop a false sense of safety.   They think once they hit the throttle, they’ll be invincible.  That sense of invincibility disappears after they hit their first obstacle and go flying into the dirt, or worse.  Because of this, it’s important to wear the appropriate gear when on ATV riding rentals, and appropriate gear does not mean shoes, t-shirt, and jeans.  It means such equipment as:

  • Helmet
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Running boots
  • Chest protector
  • Knee and neck protection

By wearing the ideal gear, first-time ATV biking riders can enjoy a fun day in the trail, rather than sitting on the sidelines nursing a variety of bumps and lumps, or in the hospital.

Don’t Go Crazy with the Throttle

Like anyone sitting in the driver’s seat of a highly powerful vehicle, many riders possess the urge to hit the throttle and speed off as fast as they can go. Sadly, odds are they’ll end up laying on their back, staring up at the clouds.  That’s because, rather than having the roller coaster trip of the dreams, they lose control of their vehicle and go on a journey into the dirt or sand. It would suck to get stuck in a tree with a broken arm, right? An OHV can be an amazing experience if you just be safe about it.
